Who vs Whom

Quick Tip: Remember: Who is used as the subject (who did it?). Whom is used as the object (to whom did you give it?).

Who

pronoun

used to introduce a question about a person or people

Examples:
  • Who is that person?
  • Who called you yesterday?
  • I wonder who will win.
pronoun

used as a relative pronoun to refer to a person or people previously mentioned

Examples:
  • The person who called is my friend.
  • Anyone who wants to come is welcome.

Whom

pronoun

used instead of "who" as the object of a verb or preposition

Examples:
  • To whom did you give the letter?
  • The person whom I met yesterday.
  • For whom is this gift?
