Find the word that doesn't belong in a group
Click "Generate New Puzzle" to start, or enter your own words below
The Odd Word Out Solver helps you identify which word doesn't belong in a group of words. This puzzle type tests your understanding of semantic relationships and word categories.
Automatic Puzzle Generation: Click the "Generate New Puzzle" button to create a random puzzle. The system will automatically select 4-5 words where one word doesn't belong to the same semantic category as the others. For example, if you see "apple, banana, cherry, hammer", the odd word is "hammer" because it's not a fruit like the others.
Manual Input: You can also enter your own words to solve. Type each word in the input field and press Enter or click "Add" to add it to your list. You need at least 3 words, but 4-5 words work best. Once you've added your words, click "Solve Puzzle" to find which one doesn't belong.
How It Works: The solver uses WordNet's semantic relationships, specifically hypernyms (broader categories) and hyponyms (specific instances). Words that share a common hypernym belong to the same category, while the odd word out will have different semantic relationships. The solver analyzes these relationships to identify which word doesn't fit with the others.
Understanding Results: After solving, you'll see which word is the odd one out and an explanation of why. The explanation will typically mention the common category that most words belong to, and why the odd word doesn't fit that category.
Perfect for students, teachers, puzzle enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to improve their vocabulary and semantic understanding!
